1. Why is GMAC Insurance better coverage for my RV?
GMAC Insurance is America’s #1 RV Insurance Specialist,1 so we really know what you need — and what you don’t. We’ve carefully built in special RV coverages that are missing from regular car insurance.
For instance, we include Personal belongings coverage for full replacement cost up to $3,000 – From laptops and linens to attachments and accessories, your belongings are automatically insured for what you paid — not a depreciated amount. You can also add more coverage if you need it.
Features like Optional Full Replacement Cost Coverage, our Storage Option, Full-Timer Coverage, and access to our RV claims experts are just a few of the essentials that no RVer should be without – especially when our SmartDiscounts help make it so affordable.
For a more comprehensive list, read RV versus Auto Insurance.
2. How can I save money on my RV insurance?
GMAC Insurance offers a wide range of SmartDiscounts that can help lower your RV insurance premium. When you get a quote online or contact us for a quote, we can help you determine which discounts you qualify for and how much you can save.
Customers who switch to GMAC Insurance save an average of $325 per year, and you could save even more through SmartDiscounts like:
- RVs and Autos on One Convenient Policy
- Storage Option
- GM/GMAC Discounts
- Paid-in-Full Discount
- Homeowners Discounts
And of course, we have built-in savings for having a safe-driving history, anti-theft and safety devices, and much more.
3. I only use my RV for part of the year. Do I still have to pay for full coverage?
Our Storage Option lets you suspend the coverages you don’t need during the months your RV is off the road. It can cut your premium in half while you’re not using your RV!
Of course, you’ll still be covered for threats like fire, storm damage and theft. With just six months of Storage Option, customers could save up to $400 off their premium.
4. Will my attachments and accessories be covered?
We automatically insure your permanent attachments and accessories for the full amount it would cost to replace them — not a depreciated amount.
5. A friend of mine totaled his RV and is still paying off his loan. Can you protect my RV better than that?
We sure can. It’s called our Optional Full Replacement Cost Coverage and here’s how it works: If your RV is totaled or stolen (and not recovered) in its first five model years it will be replaced with a comparable new RV, even if you’re not the original owner. After the first five model years, you will receive your full original purchase price — not a depreciated amount — toward the purchase of the replacement RV. Replacement Cost Coverage must be purchased during the RV’s model year or within the following four years.
Optional Full Replacement Cost Coverage protects you from depreciation – you could save thousands!
6. I live in my RV full-time. Will I be adequately covered?
Our Full-Timers Coverage is designed just for you. It provides coverages similar to those provided by a homeowners policy, but is built from the ground up by our RV experts to meet your unique needs.
7. What about my other insurance needs?
You can turn to GMAC Insurance for all your insurance needs, from coverage for your car, motorcycle or ATV, to golf carts, boats and even your home. And we provide multi-vehicle and multi-policy discounts that can add up to great savings.
In fact, you can earn a multi-vehicle discount of up to 20% for insuring your RV and autos with us. And if your RV and auto are ever involved in the same covered accident, you’ll only be responsible for one deductible, not two!
8. I’m interested in GMAC Insurance, but my current insurance doesn’t expire for several months. Do I have to wait till then?
There’s no need to wait until your current insurance runs out. You can cancel your current coverage at any time, and your insurer must send you a refund if you’ve paid in advance for any part of your unearned premium. Call us today for better coverage and great rates.
9. Does GMAC Insurance cover my RV in Mexico?
Since a regular U.S. auto insurance or RV insurance policy typically will not cover you under Mexican law, GMAC Insurance partners with approved Mexico Insurance professionals who provide the coverages you need when RVing through Mexico.
Check out our section on Mexico Insurance, or contact us for more information. But whatever you do, don’t travel in Mexico without the right coverage!
10. How much RV insurance coverage should I carry?
Determining the amount of RV insurance coverage you need means considering a number of factors.
State Requirements
The state where your vehicle is registered has a lot to do with the coverage you’ll need. Be sure to find out your state’s RV insurance requirements before choosing your coverage. Check with your local Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) or your GMAC Insurance representative for more details.
Vehicle Type
The type of vehicle you drive influences the type of insurance coverage you need. Larger recreational vehicles mean the possibility of more damage to another vehicle. Highly customized RVs also can be more expense to repair. You’ll need liability coverage that is sufficient for the type of RV you’re insuring, and the way that you use it.
Leased or Financed Vehicles
If you’re looking to insure a leased or financed vehicle, you may be required to carry minimum insurance coverages that protect you from the risk of having to pay the full cost of the vehicle in case of an accident. When you’ve paid off your RV, you may be able to lower your RV insurance premiums.
Deductible
A higher deductible can lower your RV insurance costs in the short-run. But choose your deductible keeping in mind the amount of money you’re comfortable paying out-of-pocket in case of an accident or other loss.
Coverage Limits
Before you choose low RV coverage limits, consider your financial situation. Lower coverage limits may cost you less now, but in the case of an accident, will you have the ability to pay for damages that go over your insurance coverage limits? If not, consider higher liability limits. In the long run, it could be the best choice for you.
Storage Option
If you’re not using your recreational vehicle for extended periods of time, you can take advantage of our exceptional Storage Option. It allows you to reduce your premium up to 53% on average, by suspending collision and liability coverages when you’re not using your RV! Comprehensive stays in effect to protect you against threats like theft, wind, fire or storms.
Check with your RV insurance agent or a GMAC Insurance representative to see what’s best for your situation, since company policies and state requirements may vary.
11. Which drivers does my RV insurance policy cover?
Your policy covers all of the drivers you listed when you purchased your insurance policy. If you aren’t sure who is included, check your online account or call a GMAC Insurance representative at 1-800-325-1190 to find out.
